Dr Mahesh R Desai (Visiting Consultant)
A graduate of B.J. Medical College under the auspices of Pune University, India, Dr. Mahesh Desai pursued his post graduation (MS) studies from the same Alma Mater. Trained in Urology, he was a recipient of the Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of London and Edinburgh (FRCS) in 1973. A decade later, he took over as the Chairman of the Department of Uroglogy at Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (1983 – June, 2010), following which he served the Hospital as its Medical Director (June, 2010 – August, 2016). He now sits as the Managing Trustee of MPUH and Honorary Managing Director of Muljibhai Patel Society for Research in Nephro-Urology (February, 2001) and the Director of the Jayaramdas Patel Academic Center.

A master of the most modern treatment for the stone disease, he is responsible for the development of modern innovative techniques in Percutaenous Nephrolithotrispy (PCNL), Ureteroscopy and ESWL. (Total stone treatment more than 25000) He has performed over 14000 PCNL, close to the largest series across the globe. He pioneered the service of kidney transplantation in Gujarat, along with expanding the use of ultrasound in Urology. It was in the year 1980 that Dr. Desai performed his first ever kidney transplant and since then, 2825 Renal Transplants have been performed at MPUH.
Apart from being a world-class surgeon, Dr. Desai has successfully organized several conferences and workshops across the country. He led an epidemiological survey for prostatic diseases in the ageing male population, in Kheda / Charotar district of Gujarat. To this day, he has conducted 245 workshops, published 201 scientific papers in national and international journals and contributed to over 35 books. Under his guidance, the institute has also produced over 750 scientific papers which have been presented at various national and international seminars and conferences.
Dr. Desai has been an awardee of the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award (2000) in “Recognition of the best talents in encouraging the development of specialties in different branches of Medicine” by the President of India.

Along with his direct contribution to the Endourology Society, Dr. Desai has also served the society as a teacher and mentor to over 80 students who have trained in Urology under his guidance. As Director of Jayramdas Patel Academic Centre, he has inculcated the motto of Institute “Enter to Learn and Exit to Serve” in the minds of young trainee and experienced alumni. MPUH has been recognized as an Endourology training center and has produced 10 Endourology fellows till date, many of whom have published prize-winning essays.
Dr. Mahesh Desai’s wide experience and honed set of skills have resulted in him becoming the first Indian to be elected as a member of the American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons. On 30th April, 2003, he also became the first Indian to deliver a Guest Lecture in the plenary session of American Urological Association’s Annual Conference held at Chicago. Under his leadership, India hosted, for the first time, Video Urology World Conference in the year 2000 and World Congress on Endourology in the year 2004. Healthcare Executive Magazine, a leading periodical in the field of Medicine, has featured Dr. Desai in the list of the 25 Healthcare Influencers of India.
